As someone has said in class, this is my own little Book of Hours. It's just a page though, but calendar page from my own little Book of Hours is very wordy. I wanted to try to do the gold with gold instead of gouache, but we only had one sheet of vellum and I was determined to not screw around with it. It's all gouache then, on a small sheet of calfskin vellum. I think maybe I want to get some more of that or its veggie equivalent to make more pages. One thing that didn't scan well and I didn't bother fixing is that there are light blue pictures of the zodiac in the white over the name. They are hard to see in real life too, but I was going for the subtle little Easter egg look in there.
I am immensely proud of this, it is so fancy. If you can't tell, the J is for June. The calendar above it has the proper number of days and there's a little line where the zodiac changes over. The constellations aren't accurate because I wanted some recognizable ones in there and didn't care where they went, but hardly anyone without more than a casual interest in astronomy will recognize that right away. Done all in gouache on vellum. Next time I'll see if I can gild the thin lines and tiny stars for it.
